The present invention relates generally to decoder circuitry for a receiver which receives an encoded signal transmitted upon a communication channel susceptible to fading, interference, and noise. More particularly, the present invention relates to decoder circuitry, and an associated method, in which the manner by which the encoded signal is decoded is dependent upon the amount of distortion introduced upon the signal during transmission of the signal upon the communication channel. When the signal is transmitted upon a communication channel which exhibits only a small amount of fading, interference, and noise, the signal is decoded by a simple decoding technique. When the signal is transmitted upon a communication channel which exhibits moderate amounts of fading, interference, and noise, the signal is decoded by a complex decoding technique. Operation of the present invention limits decoding of an encoded signal by a complex decoding technique except when decoding by the complex decoding technique is most beneficial. When the signal is transmitted upon the communication channel which exhibits only a small amount of fading, interference, and noise, to cause only small amounts of distortion upon portions of the communication signal, such signal portions can be decoded adequately by utilizing a relatively simple decoding technique. And, when the signal is transmitted upon a communication channel which exhibits significant amounts of fading, interference, noise, or interference, that is, when decoding of the signal portion by the complex decoding technique would not be able to recover the informational content of the signal, decoding of such signal portions by the complex decoding technique is not attempted. Signal portions having such significant levels of distortion introduced thereupon are discarded or decoded in other manners. When, however, decoding of the signal by the complex decoding technique would be beneficial, for example, when moderate levels of fading, interference, and noise introduce moderate amounts of distortion upon the signal, decoding of the signal by such complex decoding technique is implemented. Because decoding is a computationally-intensive process, a significant amount of power is required to perform the decoding operation.
The invention relates to a transmission system employing a transmitter including a splitter for splitting up a transmission signal into a signal having a low frequency range and a signal having a high frequency range, and a first coding device for deriving a coded signal having a low frequency range from the signal having a low frequency range.
The first coding device is arranged for transmitting the coded signal having a low frequency range to a receiver by a first transmission channel. The receiver employs a first decoder for forming a reconstructed signal having a low frequency range based on the coded signal having a low frequency range. The transmitter further employs a second coding device for deriving a coded signal having a high frequency range from the signal having a high frequency range, which second coding device is arranged for transmitting the coded signal having a high frequency range from the transmitter to the receiver by a second transmission channel.
The receiver further employs a second decoder for forming a reconstructed signal having a high frequency range based on the coded signal having a high frequency range by using a noise signal coming from a noise signal source, and a combiner for combining the reconstructed signal having a low frequency range and the reconstructed signal having a high frequency range.
The invention further relates to a transmitter, a receiver, a coding device, a decoder, a coding method and a decoding method to be used in a transmission system of such type.

Men and women often disagree about the meaning of women’s nonverbal cues, particularly those conveying dating-relevant information. Men perceive more sexual intent in women’s behavior than women perceive or report intending to convey. Although this finding has been attributed to gender differences in the threshold for labeling ambiguous cues as sexual in nature, little research has been conducted to determine etiology. Using a model that differentiates perceptual sensitivity from decisional bias, we found no evidence that men have lenient thresholds for perceiving women’s nonverbal behavior as indicating sexual interest.

Just as in previous studies, men were more likely than women to misperceive friendliness as sexual interest, but they also were quite likely to misperceive sexual interest as friendliness. Generally, an audio signal encoding apparatus compresses an audio signal into a mono or stereo type downmix signal instead of compressing each channels of a multi-channel audio signal. The audio signal encoding apparatus transfers the compressed downmix signal to a decoding apparatus together with a spatial information signal or, ancillary data signal or stores the compressed downmix signal and the spatial information signal in a storage medium.
In this case, the spatial information signal, which is extracted in downmixing a multi-channel audio signal, is used in restoring an original multi-channel audio signal from a compressed downmix signal. The spatial information signal includes a header and spatial information. And, configuration information is included in the header. The header is the information for interpreting the spatial information. An audio signal decoding apparatus decodes the spatial information using the configuration information included in the header.
The configuration information, which is included in the header, is transferred to a decoding apparatus or stored in a storage medium together with the spatial information. An audio signal encoding apparatus multiplexes an encoded downmix signal and the spatial information signal together into a bitstream form and then transfers the multiplexed signal to a decoding apparatus.
Since configuration information is invariable in general, a header including configuration information is inserted in a bitstream once. Since configuration information is transmitted with being initially inserted in an audio signal once, an audio signal decoding apparatus has a problem in decoding spatial information due to non-existence of configuration information in case of reproducing the audio signal from a random timing point.
Namely, since an audio signal is reproduced from a specific timing point requested by a user instead of being reproduced from an initial part in case of a broadcast, VOD video on demand or the like, it is unable to use configuration information transferred by being included in an audio signal. So, it may be unable to decode spatial information.
