I’ve only really used Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio and Bare Knuckles in the past but they’ve all gone out of the window now. I’ll be recommending them to my customers here on the IOW from now on which hopefully means I’ll be buying a lot more of them. I’ll be buying all my parts from you from now on.

Since the launch of the original, super-affordable Brian May Guitars Special, the unique configuration of Brian’s original instrument has become available to musicians all over the World. Consequently, House Music has fielded a wealth of questions regarding the Brian May Guitars range – everything from set-up, maintenance and switch orientation to the various amplifiers and effects units that Brian employs to achieve his distinctive sound.
First developed for use on Ormston Burns guitars in , The term “Tri-Sonic” derives from the fact that the unit picks up sound from three points – the top and both sides – meaning that the vibration of the strings is sampled from a longer than usual length. The three pickups are wired in series for increased output and a fuller signal.

The neck is one-piece maple construction with 22 frets and a small headstock. The frets are carefully positioned which allows the action to be set very low without creating a buzz. It has a white single-ply pickguard.
The original prototype had 14db boost but Eric wanted more. Fender then created a prototype with three Fender Gold Lace Sensor pickups neck, middle, bridge and a circuit that had a 25db boost in the midrange at around Hz. This model then went into production. At first, the Eric Clapton Signature Stratocaster was only available in the three colours suggested by Eric.

Although CBS purchased Fender officially on January 3rd , it took some time till the guitars changed though by mid , six months before CBS bought Fender, things were already “on the way down”. By the end of , the general look and feel of the Fender guitars had changed significantly.
All collectors feel the quality of their instruments and amps suffered as CBS employed more “mass production” manufacturing processes to the Fender guitars. The “large peghead” starting in late as used on the Fender Stratocaster was one example of the bad changes to come. The “custom contoured” bodies Fender was famous for no longer were as sculped and sleek. Newer and less attractive plastics were used for the pickguards. Pearl fingerboard inlays replaced the original “clay” dots.
Indian rosewood replaced the beautifully figured Brazilian rosewood on the fingerboards. And by , polyurathane replaced the original nitrocellulose lacquer that was used from Fender’s conception.

Vintage Fender pickups are highly sought after. Just finding these pickups is a challenge all its own. Even if one is purchased online at a hefty cost, how can you be sure of its vintage value? Up until , Fender did have several processes that can be measured to determine the date of their pickups. Even if you’ve never really used a multimeter, don’t be intimidated by it for this project.
Whereas dating grey bottom Strat pickups is normally a case of reading a date format (either handwritten or stamped), black bottom Strat.

The Fender Stratocaster is the archetype electric guitar. When someone mentions “electric guitar,” the body shape and style of the Stratocaster is probably what comes to mind. The Stratocaster is a classic guitar because it has a great build and an equally great sound. Since its first model year in , the Stratocaster has kept its distinct body shape and notoriety. Most of the vintage Stratocasters considered to be the best were made before

The Fender Stratocaster is also one of my favorite years for the Stratocaster. It was the mid 60s and the surfing craze had hit. To cash in on it Leo Fender had really started ramping up the custom colored Stratocasters. However, there were quite a few minor changes including the first major change to the Fender headstock logo. It also has an added 4th patent number as well. Mid they added Patent Number 3,, to the logo. Another change that Fender made was using Pearloid dots instead of the so-called clay dots as fret markers on the neck.
The image below shows the Pearloid dots on the right and the previously used clay dots on the left. The reason for this is that Leo Fender was very miserly. The Fender Stratocaster also stuck with the curved laminate fingerboard made of Brazilian rosewood as you can see in the image below. The main part of the neck was still rock maple and used the same truss rod as well.

Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin reportedly borrowed the guitar from a friend, or so the story goes, and sold it to Corgan, who refers to it as the “guitar that changed the direction of our lives. On June 12, , about a year after releasing “Gish” and moments after Corgan left the stage at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit, a thief snagged the Smashing Pumpkins’ lead singer’s beloved guitar and disappeared out the back door into the night. Devastated, Corgan offered a reward.
Nobody responded to the offer, but he never gave up hope that he’d get it back one day. And then it happened, 27 years later. A mom from Flushing, Michigan, who bought a funky guitar at a garage sale for bucks a decade earlier — learned the hidden truth about the “conversation piece” she kept in the basement but never played, and invited Corgan over to see for himself. He immediately recognized unique details: The cigarette burn on the neck.
The initials “KM” engraved in the bridge. The sloppy artwork Corgan added himself, the f-word scratched into the paint, and, of course, the way it felt in his hands. You can see the joy in Corgan’s face in photos of the rocker’s reunion with his beloved “Bullet Strat” documented on YouTube, and celebrated online. As things turn out, “somewhere” is a converted auto-repair garage at West Belmont in Roscoe Village, home to Chicago luthier Geoff Benge’s guitar shop.
Pickups & Electronic
In typical Leo Fender fashion, the original Strat pickup was an ingeniously simple yet highly effective design. It consisted of a flat, black vulcanised fibre bottom and top plate held together via tension with six sandcast hand-bevelled alnico magnet slugs, fitted into each corresponding hole, around which a coil of gauge formvar wire was wound by hand. White hot and black ground cloth wires were then soldered on before the whole assembly was potted in hot wax to minimise feedback and overly microphonic tendencies.
Although the height of each pickup could be adjusted using screws on the surface of the scratchplate at either end of the coil each screw threading into the bottom flat with tension provided by surgical tubing , the relative height of each slug was fixed.

So, you can’t afford that ’54 Strat, or that ’64, or even that ’74 for that matter. Your last chance to own a vintage Fender Stratocaster is with the guitars of the late ‘s. You spot a ’79 in a local shop, or online, but how can you be certain it is a ’79? Some dealers simply go by the serial number, which you will discover can be far from accurate.
Some might go by the pot codes, but those could have been stock a year or more old by the time they were put into the newly finished guitar. Or perhaps the guitar was even assembled by various parts picked up over the years and is being passed off as “All original”. My intent with this site is to educate those who are on the hunt for that last affordable vintage Fender Stratocaster.
Best Year for the Fender Stratocaster
From over 30 years of vintage guitar collecting, dealing, and repairs, comes the knowledge of which have the tone and why. Lots of other pickup companies know how to make a hot pickup, not many know tone from Diddley! We have taken what we believe to be the most sought after, and pure essence of “the” Stat sound and enhanced it. A bit more output, a bit more fullness, and a bit more of the bell like tone we all love.

So you need to figure out the year of production for your Fender guitar or bass. You’re not alone. Fenders rank as the most frequently bought and sold instruments on Reverb , and finding a precise date of manufacture can be key to determining the value and specifics of an instrument. The most important thing to keep in mind when dating a Fender is the highly modular nature of the designs.
Like Henry Ford, part of Leo Fender’s genius was in optimizing the company’s production efficiency. His guitars were built en masse by an entire factory, not a single luthier toiling over one instrument at a time. Features like bolt-on necks and pickups wired into the pickguard all helped the Fender factory churn out guitar after guitar, day after day. This also means that various parts used on a particular guitar may have come from different points in time, so no single number can absolutely define when the instrument was built.
Instead, the best approach to dating a Fender is to combine indicators from the design of the instrument, the dates found on the neck and body, along with the serial number. Once you have the information you need, if you’re interested in selling your Fender, you can use Reverb to get it in front of the largest audience of musicians in the world by clicking on this link.
1964 Fender Stratocaster Exposed – Are They Worth The Money?
We explore their timeless magnetic attraction for guitar players. Carson also wanted four or five pickups on the Strat, but, fortunately, Leo had the good sense to veto that suggestion. Breaking one down into its individual components and examining manufacturing inconsistencies may provide some of the clues. Since the magnetic slugs were of a consistent diameter, holes were made in both the top and bottom flat that were tight enough to hold position on the slugs through friction alone.
Initially, the fibreboard was black, but this changed to grey around March of Later in the s, the grey got darker.
I often get asked, how old is my Fender guitar? The Fender numbers tell the story of the company over the years. Unfortunately, the serial number placement is sporadic and many ID numbers over lap between years and models. In many instances, there is no exact known date for a specific guitar. That is why I decided to write this article. I want to help you understand how to tell the age of your Fender as well as any Fender you see.
Fender like Gibson has been producing guitars for many years. Certain styles and colors have come and gone over the years, but there is no real obvious way to tell how old a Fender is other than the identification number. Unfortunately, Fender decided not to simply write the date of manufacture on the guitar.
